Art Deco Biking

I’m pretty obsessed with downtown South Beach (especially the building above), with these old Art Deco buildings. It’s such a contrast to the all grey buildings in NYC. Why can’t we get some color??

You’ll notice all the buildings are pastel or bright colors. They are all like that with some white buildings in-between them. WE took the W bikes and rode around to look at all of these 1930s buildings. I would definitely encourage you to do this if you ever are in Miami South Beach (even though it's so hot).

Art Deco Eye Brows

The Art Deco buildings also have some really cool design features. My favorite one is what they call “eye brows”. They are the protruding elements over top of the windows. I just think it’s hilarious that they are technically called eye brows. Right?? Haha.

Typography

Then you will notice that they all incorporate circles on all the buildings in-between the windows. I love that. Also, all of the typography is in the classic Art Deco fonts, which is so retro chic. Somehow it doesn't seem like too much putting it all together.

Colorful building inspiration

I love biking from the W down to this historic district to study the buildings and get inspiration from their unapologetic personality.

Our über driver one night was telling us how all of the old buildings are starting to get torn down, except for this one street which is classified as historic. Only, he told us “historic” just means they can’t do anything to the outside. And the contractors take that literally, they gut EVERYTHING and just leave the 5inch exterior in tact. I think it’s sad, but can’t stop progress I guess.

How do you stay inspired as a business owner or creative?  Let me know in the comments below.

Xoxo,

Sarah
