This Weeks Moodboard & Color Story

This week’s moodboard comes with a full color palette. When making a moodboard, I try to have balance in the proportions of everything, but also in the colors. I worked with complementary colors (blue & orange) this week, and wanted to show you how all of these colors work together in a color palette.

All of the background illustration is by me as well! I thought it added a little more texture to the overall board. Hope you love!

Blogger Branding: Sivan Ayla
 
 

As some of you may know, branding is my #1 love. It really makes me happy seeing beautiful branding in the form of packaging, business cards, Pinterest pages, you name it.

In the blogger world I’ve definitely seen some people take advantage of how they brand themselves, and Sivan Alya (@sivanalya) is the queen of this. I’ve recently started following her and have been captivated by how well she has branded herself.

I wanted to break it down and talk through some of the different things she does that WORK and work really well.

Created her own tagline

Her tagline “+ Lux Unfiltered” is seen almost everywhere that Sivan is associated. Insta bio, Pinterest page, and just in the way she acts and what she posts about. She’s really made it clear that she likes to make everyday life the best it can be and she’s never going to sugar coat it. It’s an interesting take on blogger branding because you see tag-lines used with large corporations and Sivan used that practice for her brand as well. Genius!

Created her own hashtags

She’s also added her own hashtags to her Insta bio. These are very Instagram specific, but are a very interesting way to create a sort of members only club atmosphere. It sucks you in as a reader because you want to know what #sivanin60seconds is and what it means.

Customizes each platform

As you saw in my first section her tag-line includes the “+” symbol. And she uses the EVERYWHERE. On her blog branding, Pinterest page, Insta bio, etc. She takes every platform she has and tries to customize it to her branding. And the + sign is one of the main ways that she does that. It’s almost like a sub logo that she uses to let people know that it’s her brand. Her website is unique, as well as the fonts she uses, and her images she pins to Pinterest. A lot of how she presents her self on each platform is carefully thought through, so it matches her style and brand to perfection.

Keeps it consistent

This is the age of practice of branding. If it’s not consistent in your logo, fonts, colors, attitude, etc. your audience is going to get confused. It’s okay to re-brand or change things here and there, but when you do, you have to make sure it’s consistent on every single page and I think she does a great job at that.

Wish List: Fall Items I Want
 
 

It’s fall which means a wardrobe update! How cute are all of the items above? I love still having some long skirts and dresses in the fall paired with a sweater and sneakers to make them casual. PLUS I’m obsessed with mock neck and turtle necks right now. I feel like they are so chic and sophisticated.

Also let me just say that I’m OBSESSED with Yankee candles. They’re so underated. They last such a long time, they actually make your room smell good, and this scent is literally the scent of fall. Plus you can usually find them on sale at Marshalls, TJ Max, or Khols.

Also, I’m not quite sure how I feel about this hair accessories trend, since me wearing a headband makes me look like I’m 12, but this one looks so chic and easy to match with any outfit.

I’ve also tried the long coat on and it’s SO soft. It’s perfect for fall and easy to layer sweaters under neath.

5 Wellness Habits I Need To Get Back Into

I’m finally not feeling sick anymore (TG!!), but have still been feeling foggy headed/tired/overall just moody. I wasn’t exactly sure why, but knew in the back of my mind that there were definitely things that before getting sick I had been consistently doing and have clearly made a difference in my overall wellness.

So yesterday, I took time to notice all the things that I was doing differently and started implementing them back into my routine. I wanted to share these with you because they have really made such a difference in my life and in making me happier and more energetic. I love that I have this blog to share tips that I’ve learned and maybe to remind myself to listen to my own advice… I’ll go through them as you would throughout the day, so you can see where to incorporate them!

So anyway, here are my 5 wellness habit I need to start up again..

1: Wake Up Earlier

I think this one only applies if you are a morning person like me, but when I was sick I found myself sleeping in WAY later than usual. Then that habit carried over once I felt better because my body got used to it, and I hated it. Getting up earlier when everything is quiet and noone is trying to reach you makes me so so happy. Plus in NYC it’s almost quiet and I love that.

2: Drinking lemon water/coffee

While I know you’ve probably heard this one a billion times, I actually think it’s important, but maybe not for the reason you think. Taking 5 minutes to make the water, squeeze the lemon, and drink your little mixture creates a morning ritual which I feel helps slow down the whole morning and clear your head. I like to do lemon water AND coffee because I’m not that girl who is can survive without caffeine. I just think it’s important to take a second and chill before you think about schedules, goals, emails, etc.

3: Not looking at my phone the second I wake up

It feels like the norm is to always be on your phone now. I literally look at it the SECOND I wake up and for some reason that seems so wrong to me. I haven’t ever really been successful at not looking at it, but I want to really give it a real try. Maybe drink my morning coffee and open the blinds before checking this little rectangle. Anyone else feel that way? It’s so hard because you don’t even realize it until you’re doing it.

4: Working out 3 times a week

I actually NEVER EVER thought I would say this, but working out is starting to take a priority in my life. I feel like a poser even just saying that. I’ve never been into working out and still don’t exactly enjoy it, but it has helped my anxiety SO much. Even if that means going for a walk or doing BBG really slow, it still helps to get the endorphins going.

I think it never helped before because I wasn’t doing it consistently, but not I can see a HUGE difference in myself and BBG literally takes all the thought out of it. No gym, no planning, just 28 minutes 3 times a week.

5: Reading before bed

Yep, I’m clearly a grandma. Reading before bed is a way to disconnect and just focus on 1 thing. I mean how often do we get time to focus on ONE thing? NEVER. I could go on, but a Lauren Elizabeth explains it better here (go to 10mins in).

There ya have it!! All the habits I need to start doing again. Time go take my own advice and go drink my lemon water..

Easy Nighttime Beauty Routine

I feel like people are afraid of a beauty routine/skincare routine because there are SO many products and it’s so hard to choose which products are right for you. Plus a lot of beauty bloggers make it seem SO intimidating with their 10+ step routine.

It definitely doesn’t need to be that hard, and I don’t always use the same products, but I follow the same steps. I want to make it easy for you all to make your own beauty/skincare routine, so I’m going to breakdown my nighttime beauty routine! Video is on my IGTV.

Nighttime Beauty Routine

***Always wash face before skincare - I use Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser***

  1. Gisou Honey Hair Oil // You can’t forget about the hair!! I did a review on this hair oil awhile back and I am still loving it. It moisturizes my hair so much, smells amazing, and a little goes a long way. You want to moisturize your hair in some way after washing it so it doesn’t get too dry.

  2. Summer Friday’s Overtime Mask // A physical exfoliate is my first skincare step. This means that there are actual small chunks of sugar or a mineral that you rub on your face. If you have dry skin like me, you always want to be exfoliating the dead skin cells (ew!) off of your face so the skin stay smooth. I wouldn’t recommend using this mask everyday, but sticking to it 1-3 times a week. You can use any exfoliator, I also love this one from the drug store!

  3. Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Serum // So after exfoliating, I like to use this resurfacing serum. I use this almost everyday because I find that it makes your pores smaller and your skin SO soft. I can really tell a difference in how smooth my skin is when I use this serum. I also did a review on this here!

  4. Ole Hendricks Eye Cream // Next I always do an eye cream BEFORE my moisturizer. If you watch the video you see that I make circles around my eyes. Watch me carefully in my IGTV video because if you do it the same as me it will drain the under eyes to make them less puffy (learned this from Lauren over at The Skinny Confidential)

  5. Universal Emulsion // Last thing for your face is a moisturizer! I just use this to lock everything in. I love this one because it’s pretty light, but is really moisturizing. And whatever is left on my hands I like to use as hand lotion!

  6. Honest Chapstick // Last I love to use a good chapstick. My lips are always chapped, so I switch mine up on a regular basis!

There you go! It’s basically a 3 step skincare routine with a 4th step thrown in there. I swear by exfoliating my face, it’s what keeps it so clean and fresh looking. Plus drinking lots of water!


Why I Love Buying Vintage

I LOVE buying vintage pieces, but I feel like they get a bad reputation…which I get, but I think they’re some of the best items I own. Today I want to break down why I love vintage pieces, where you can find them, and what to look for!

WHY I love buying vintage:

My main reason for buying vintage items is that (especially for clothing) you are getting a piece that is completely unique. I highly doubt anyone you see on the street is going to have the same piece, which to me is amazing! It makes your style unique and I love that.

I also love how if you are at a yard sale, or buy something from a flea market that you almost always get a story from the person selling it to you. There is always a memory behind a piece and I think it makes that item so special.

My last reason of why I love buying vintage is that you aren’t creating anymore waste. It’s so easy to get caught up in needing this new sweater/purse/pair of shoes, but I love how you are not wasting anything by buying vintage items, plus it’s usually so inexpensive!

WHERE to look for vintage items:

If you like a little adventure, there are plenty of places to go in search of vintage items. Some are easy to locate while others take a little more digging to find.

Regardless of where you live, chances are you can always go to Goodwill or Salvation Army. In the city they’re a little tougher though (kinda gross tbh) but in more suburban areas they have some serious hidden gems. I would buy anything at the suburban ones but in the city I would focus more on home goods. I found a set of West Elm mugs for $10 and they are so cute. Keep in mind that Wednesdays at Salvation Army are 50% off.

Then there are the flea markets and yard sales that can be a little trickier to find. In New York there is always the Brooklyn flea market along with a few other recurring ones spread about the city. If you are in a more suburban area there are always yard sales! I would recommend using Google to figure out the recurring flea markets near you as well as any yard sales that are scheduled.

If you just want to shop for vintage items online I would recommend eBay and Poshmark. eBay definitely has some cute vintage purses and Levi’s jeans. On Poshmark you can find cashmere sweaters for sooo cheap, plus so much more.

At flea markets, Goodwill/Salvation Army, and eBay you are less likely to find name brand items, but I would focus more on if you like the piece and if you think it would add to your wardrobe. However, on Poshmark you can find name brand items like JCrew, Free People, and Zara just to name a few.

WHAT to look for when buying:

I think this is the important part about buying used/vintage items. You need to really take a second to evaluate what you are buying.

Make sure that the seller looks reputable. This is more for online items, but if the seller looks like they aren’t getting good reviews or you wouldn’t normally buy from them, I wouldn’t purchase anything from that shop (even if it seems like a good deal).

I also make sure to really examine each piece online or in person. Check for pilling, stains, damage, stretching, or any signs of wear.

Taking Your Favorite Summer Pieces Into Fall
 
 

As Labor Day ends, I feel like that is the signal to start thinking about fall and I’m READY for it. It’s weird how you always want the season to change just at the right time, and after Labor Day seems like the perfect start to picking up fall pieces.

BUT, it’s still going to be fairly hot out, especially here in NYC, so I’m here today to show you how to take your summer pieces and use them during this transition into fall.

How to take your summer pieces into fall.

First, let’s start with this white flowy skirt. It’s the perfect summer staple, as it’s flowy, light, and white. But, matched with an autumnal colored shirt and a pair of high knee boots/booties it would be such a cute outfit for those days that aren’t hot, but aren’t cold. I found the shirt in this photo from Marshalls for $9! So cheap, but so effective and versatile.

I encourage you to still think about your summer skirts and find pieces that bring them into fall. This way you are getting SO much more use out of each item, without spending a ton of money.

Then, a pair of ripped jeans. Always a perfect piece for colder summer nights, but the rips leave always remind me of summer. SO with something like that, I like to add in a more formal piece, like this blouse ($15 from Marshalls)!

Adding this long sleeve blouse so casual jeans, brings the outfit to a new level of chic & I love it!

If you are finding that you have more causal pieces that you want to bring up a notch, you should try to find something with a little more structure to make your outfit more sophisticated.

As you can see, just by changing up your shirts, you can get a totally different feel from your favorite summer pieces & can wear them all the way through fall. Might have to put them away when winter starts to creep up though :/

My Sephora Sale Picks & How to Purchase Smart
 
 

Sephora is having their sale right now! I want to share the mindset you should have about this sale (i.e. don’t buy just to buy), what I’m going to buy, and more of my favorite products!!

First what is the Sephora sale?

If you are a beauty insider, you can get 10% off your purchase! It’s free to sign up and doesn’t cost you anything, except your email address. If you already are a beauty insider, and are either Rogue or VIB, you get (respectively) 20% and 15% off!

Why is this sale so hyped?

Because usually beauty products NEVER go on sale. Or at leas the one’s that you want to go one sale never do. At least I think that’s why ever blogger ever talks about this sale.

BUT, if I were you, I wouldn’t go out and spend your life savings on a whole bunch of beauty product just because they are on sale & let me explain why...

You don’t want to buy just because something is on sale. It’s easy to start thinking “oh I need this, it’s $5 cheaper” or “but what if I want this later, I should just get it now, it’s on sale!”. Nope, that is just the marketing tactics working. It’s crazy right? They get you without you even realizing it!! Happens to me all the time and I’m not gonna let it happen this time.

The Sephora sale happens twice a year (so no need to get in a panic) and my purchasing philosophy is that you should get what you need & what you were about to go out and already purchase at full price.

Take for instance what I’m purchasing at the sale today.

First, a new moisturizer from Philosophy. I’ve been needing a new one for awhile but didn’t want to spend an absurd amount. I got this one in the Sephora play box in August & fell in love. AND extra bonus it’s only $25 for 4oz (which usually products come in 1oz containers)

I am also purchasing a new foundation, the Too Faced Born This Way foundation. I have used this so many times, but have never taken the plunge because it’s $40. And that’s a lot for me. But my foundation is about to run out at the same time as the sale is happening, so I’m going to have to buy a new foundation anyway, might as well get it on sale.

But, I’m not going to buy a million other things just because {wish I could thought, believe me}. I hope that it gives you a little guidance on how I navigate the sale!!

Almost Fall Moodboard
 
 

I wanted to create a moodboard this month, to offer some inspiration for the transition between summer and fall. I love how neural and warm everything in this board is, and how clean and simple each photo is individually.

The warm colors remind you of fall, while the green is a small reminder of the lusciousness of summer. I also added in pictures of more fall clothing, with some soft and comfy beige knit sweaters. I think that's what I'm most excited about for fall, being in cozy clothes and drinking tea without sweating ;)

I leave for labor day tomorrow, and thought that this was the perfect moodboard to put out right before the official end of summer. As always, this moodboard is downloadable for you to print and use for your own personal use!

Quality Workout Clothes For Less
 
 

Well I’m going to start this post by saying…I never thought I would be writing a post like this. However, a week ago I started doing BBG and am making it my personal goal to finish all 12 weeks of the program (also let me know if you would want to see a post about this)

But, once starting this program I realized, well, I don’t own a lot of athletic wear. The extent of my collection was 2 pairs of running shorts, two sports bras, and a pair of leggings. I wear old sorority t-shirts as my tops. Safe to say, I need some new athletic clothes.

I’d love to walk into Lulu Lemon and buy all their stuff, but that’s clearly not realistic. So, if you are new to working out or need some new workout clothes, but are on a budget, this post is for you!

I want to share how I’ve been trying to bulk up my workout clothing without breaking the bank.

My first piece of advice, TARGET.

I’ve had a sports bra from them and it’s lasted me years. Their sports bras are really good quality and will not break the bank at all, they’re all around $17-20. I also have running shorts from them that I really love. They have a lot of cute things that are good quality, especially for the price. So, I would buy running shorts, some sports bras, and leggings here.

My second piece of advice is to shop at Forever 21 for some of your sports bras and tank tops.

Their stuff is even cheaper than Targets. I would buy you tank tops here because you don’t exactly need these to be that high of quality, just light weight. I would also get some of their sports bras as well for days when you are doing lower intensity workouts.

Okay for my NYC/bug city girls, this is the best trick, sample sales.

There is a sample sale store that has new samples sales every week near my office. Right now they are having a HUGE sale on Outdoor Voices workout gear {which if you came from my Instagram is where I got these $30 leggings} and it’s the SAME PRICE as Target’s workout clothes, just Lululemon quality. Here is where you will find the biggest savings for the best workout gear.

I hope this helps you all with finding cute workout clothes or just any good bargains. I know having a cute outfit to workout in makes a workout just a little better.
